Under One Sky / Ek Aasmaan Tale - A creative ecosystem spaces dedicated to arts, learning and well-being in Govandi, through community arts practice.
What would it take to create more safe and creative environments for children and youth who are most impacted by the urban inequities, social and spatial marginalization, but have little agency in shaping it?
Following the outcomes of our place-based community-led creative engagements in the last six years in Govandi's resettlement colony, alongside the learnings/glimmers from Govandi Arts Festival, it became imperative to think of long term sustained strategy for year round engagements centred around expression, rest and play in Govandi and design spaces and programmes to suit this.
This is what led to the programme Under One Sky / Ek Aasmaan Tale in Govandi. Under One Sky is a community-led programme working towards creating an ecosystem of creative spaces for arts, learning and well-being in Govandi. The three spaces - Awaaz, HumRaahi, and Kitaab Mahal are each designed and programmed to cater to the following,
HumRaahi
A community space for collective care, HumRaahi is a space dedicated to emotional and physical well-being of the Govandi residents, led through art and music based therapeutic methods, in collaboration with HummDrum.
Awaaz
Awaaz, meaning ‘voice’ in Hindi, embodies the concept of self-expression and empowerment. It functions as a space of care for caregivers, allowing women to rest and find respite.
Kitaab Mahal
Built in 2022, Kitaab Mahal is a community space that inspires reading, with a dynamic collection of children’s literature. The community facilitators at Kitaab Mahal have captured the interest of children in books through storytelling.
